I'll agree with Steve, HP printers are mostly compatable with all linux distros either using cups or apsfilter.
I am currently using an Epson 870 though and that works with Mandrake, Slackware and Gentoo under cups or aspfilter

Have a look at linuxprinting.org - as well as a database they also have links to different printer models in the search results
