[Malvern] How does linux handle IDE channels

Hi again,
I have changed it to:
root(hd0,1) and root=hdc2
It now boots up partly - but dumps me to a maintainance mode saying that
fsck cant run. if you try to fsck it says it can't find the disk. I have
tried that with all possible device names I can think of.
What should I do?
