You use mkinitrd as root.  I'm not exactly sure how to do this but you copy
drivers into the heirarcy under /etc/mkinitrd and edit a file or two then
issue a mkinitrd command.  I've always avoided this in the past and just
compiled enough static drivers into the kernel to get it to boot as far as
having the root filesystem mounted.
