[Malvern] NVidia cards.

Are you steering clear of the NVidia binary drivers? It seems that you are.
If this is the case I can't help.
If you're prepared to swallow your pride and use binary software the 
NVidia binary driver is very good but you do have to pay attention to 
the readme.
Also, there are occasionally issues with certain cards and certain 
driver versions, in which case step back a version and try again.
I boot to runlevel 3 [1] which makes installing the driver much easier, 
but you should be OK following the provided instructions.
