ping <URL>   gives "unknown host".
ping <ip address>  gives "network is unreachable".

pgup  (applied to dmesg) "bash: command not found".

I had already tried both "ifconfig" and "route"  - no joy !

Thanks guys - I will keep trying.

What I find baffling is that it applies to both Debian AND Ubuntu installs.
Could it therfore  be some common factor  (say)  hardware - like an IRQ 
problem ?
