[Malvern] Compiz

I note that some of the more "progressive" distros are starting to include
compiz ( or similar).

The main feature seems the ability to select from four open desktops by 
rotating a cube.

Can anyone explain why this is any better than choosing from the four 
little boxes at the bottom of my KDE display ?

Or is it just another gimmick, or eye-candy ?
