If (big if) the only thing you not upgrading is the kernel, you should
be ok, as all the newer packages should have compatibility with 2.2)

Be wary of half and RH7.x and RH8 packages (differences in
glibc,gcc,font configuration, heavily patched X, autoconf,automake)
