This kind of thing is normally an auto-neg issue (where both the switch and
the NIC try to detect whether the other does 10Mb/100Mb HD/FD).  You can
force either the ports on the switch, or the network card with `mii-tool' or
`mii-diag'.  For Debian (or Knoppix) that's a simple:

  apt-get install net-tools mii-diag

although I have no clue with lesser distributions...  ;-(
