Jim,

ExtremeTech did a good review recently that might help answer some of yo=
ur
questions :

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,647840,00.asp

Due to one of the greatest attributes of Linux - CHOICE - asking 100 peo=
ple
will probably get you around 150 different answers. It depends - you'll =
see
this again and again when asking Linux questions.

Personally I'm a Red Hat fan due to the amount of documentation that can=
 be
had and the number of users out there. I tried Suse, Mandrake as well an=
d
once had Debian installed for a whole week; but I always went back to RH=
.

Its good to try different distros to see what you like, then when you
become an expert you can attempt something like Linux From Scratch!

As for XP, I know that my friendly linux guru recommended FAT32 for W2K =
so
that access to the Windows files wouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure if
this has changed recently for NTFS with Linux.

Can't help with the shops I'm afraid.

Regards,

Matt

Subject: [Nottingham] Newbie Questions

Hi,

I work in the Nottingham area and I'm interested in trying out a version=
 of
Linux on my PC at home, but I'm finding it all a bit bewildering. Could
someone help me out by providing answers to the following questions?

Firstly, which distro should I try first? I've heard of SuSE, Mandrake, =
Red
Hat and others but I can't work out which one to try . . .

Secondly, is it possible to keep my XP installation and also be able to
access all my XP files from Linux?

Finally, is there anywhere in the Nottingham area that sells the boxed
distros? The Red Hat ISOs (for example) seem to be prohibitively large!

Any help appreciated,

Thanks,

Jim
