Single (compressed) cd that autoboots, does an excellent job at 
automatically detecting hardware, bringing up DemoLinux that includes a 
surprising amount of apps including one of the office suits. It gives 
access to the host hard drive, but does not otherwise use it at all. All 
the work is done by ram drive (a-la Pixie).

Has worked well on four very different machines that I've tried it on. 
(Not the 8088 though (:-))

Could Gentoo be compiled _down_ to it?!

Is there a Linux for pre-386 machines?!!
