Firstly, not really what you are after but I think it is an interesting =
tool - xmx "an X protocol multiplexor". From the website ( http://www.cs.br=
own.edu/software/xmx/ ), "XMX provides a WYSIWIS (What You See Is What I =
See) environment; it paints the same graphics on all participating =
displays."

This sort of thing could be useful for the awareness day.

My hopefully more useful suggestion is to run X normally on the first =
machine (as :0) then also run a second server on the first machine as :1 =
which is connected to the second machine. This won't give you one big =
desktop, but you will should be able to access both screens on the same =
machine.

I can't guarantee the above will work as I've not tried it.
