Well that was logical.  Does local disk copying of large files work for you?   
If so then the problem is probably in the NFS layer of the kernel, I did try 
it out, on my SuSE-8.1 & 8.2 system using 100-Base-T Ethernet but could not 
reproduce your problem.

Have you kept your system uptodate to get Mandrake's fixes and checked their 
support database for the version you're using?  It's possible a kernel or 
driver update would solve the problem.

NFS has options for controlling packet size, if you have an MTU of 2346, try 
settings for rsize and wsize in your mount options.  rsize=2048,wsize=2048 
are likely to be sensible.  It might also for a wireless LAN be a good idea 
to try using tcp/ip mounts with the tcp option, as it has tried and tested 
error recovery and flow control.
