My IBM Thinkpad R31 (630UKP from dabs) runs debian
fine. I don't have the modem working though I've read
that it can. I've also never used infra-red, though,
again, I'm lead to believe that it can. Someone else
mentioned the R40e for 600UKP from Insight which
sounds good. They have a used R31 under blow-outs -
check the warranty, though.
Anyway, if you don't need near-desktop-level
performance, I recommend these bottom-of-the-range
laptops. They are built well and with the money you
save you can afford to replace pretty quickly.
