Thanks - Mozilla Thunderbird does seem to do what's needed.

Personally, I usually prefer plain text too, but this is one of the relatively 
few cases where I do think HTML has an advantage: being able to jump directly 
from the top of a lengthy email to any one of a number of identifiable 
sections is useful.
