Used kmix or the alsa mixer to turn up the volume?
(Default is sometimes a very low value.)

Looked in the logs for any errors?
(/var/log/messages etc)

Checked what the hardware is and what drivers in Mandrake Control Centre 
("Configure Your Computer")...?

Google for Mandrake and your hardware to see if all is already fixed?
