Sounds familar. I started using linux for phd stuff here last year and am just about begining to understand it. I can't say that uni have been very helpful with it, but so far there's not been much I've not been able to find via google or by asking here. Once you get used to the netiquette the community helps are really good. I started off with this one:

good luck and enjoy,

I'm working for Nottingham uni and about to start a part time PhD in bioinformatics, for which Linux is gonna be pretty vital, and really I'm just looking for a course of some sort of introductory course.

I can probably sit in on Nottingham uni undergrad lectures (or maybe NTU ones?) if anyone knows of any.
the local colleges don't seem to be overly useful, unless anyone knows otherwise.
red hat runs some but they cost an awful lot, and the conference and tutorials in august in Leeds look way too advanced. any ideas?

thanks a lot.
dan.
