Hi James,
There's a small program called popsneaker [http://www.ixtools.de/popsneaker]
that talks POP3 and need only download headers (if you configure it that way).
It checks each email against a set of simple filter rules, before deciding
whether to delete the message or not.
I'm currently using it to reduce junk email from about 100 messages to about
5 per day - purely on the basis of the message headers. This takes about 2
minutes to run via a slow modem link to freeserve. There's no need to do it
manually - even with a clicky interface.
The filter rules are things like:
accept "^Subject: .*\[Nottingham]"
deny "^From: .*express\.pc at btopenworld\.com"
score 10 -nocase "^Subject: .*(f|s)u(kn|ck)"
etc.
It can log details of each message its deleted, just in case you want to
follow up on one of them. I've been running it for a few months and not
found any wrong deletions yet.
Ted.
