[Nottingham] html optimiser?

Anyone know if a Linux product that will optimise HTML pages 
exists?  I converted a Word document to HTML the other day.
Unfortunately, while it looked mostly OK, the HTML version was
jampacked full of redundant tags, often enclosing empty space.

I managed to reduce it from ~800 lines of HTML to about 250,
but it would be nice to have an automated way of doing this.
