I run fsck when an ext2 partition (or some other non-journaling FS)
wasn't unmounted cleanly, otherwise about once or twice a year just to
make sure. So far, no filesystem on my computers collapsed without due
cause (*touches wood*). Unless you're paranoid or have funny hardware
that should be good enough.
