Easy answer: prefix off-topic stuff with [OT].  Anyone wanting to avoid 
such stuff just filters mail with subject lines starting 
[Nottingham][OT] to their e-wastebasket.

(Personally, I far prefer mailing lists to web forums too, and for 
essentially the same reasons.)
