Personally I don't mind getting automated messages after I send someone
a personal email, but it annoys me when badly written or configured
software sends automated messages to lists (surely they can look at the
Precedence header and do something based on that).
I think there is a 'missing link' which would be integration between
mailing lists and user agents, allowing senders to be authenticated but
without revealing their email addresses, allowing users to be 'out of
office' and switching into digest mode, allowing authenticated mail from
lists to bypass unreliable spam filters etc. etc.
