Use smart tools to check the disk for signs of failure. If it thinks 
it's on it's way out, mount it and copy off anything you can that you 
want. If it's half broken then any amount of fscking will just make it 
more difficult to get files back.

Think about getting stuff off other partitions on the same disk too.
