I generally mount the volume containing my music and copy it directly.
Several websites have recently been running conspiracy stories about
Apple trying to prevent people from backing up the ipod disk but the
reality is that it is just another vfat filesystem to Linux.

Using podzilla and gtkpod one can parse the Apple meta information if
necessary or even just shove it in to iTunes for it to sort.
