It's a way of isolating a process to have access to part of a
filesystem. You shouldn't really need it for a cron job.

No, Johannes was asking if your backup script starts something like this:
#!/bin/sh
and has the correct permissions. That hash-bang (#!) invokes the shell
interperter.
