In short: Yes, Ubuntu will serve well :) as a base server -- I guess
you're looking for a server to give you DHCP, DNS, Samba, Apache, MySQL,
NTP, etc. All of these are well supported under Ubuntu Hoary but ensure
that you add security updates to your sources and only use kernels from
the main Ubuntu sources (not universe/multiverse). If I remember
correctly, a desktop-less server class of install is an option in the
installer.
