I'm guessing these are the Emacs made by GNU rather than Apple?

I use:

  $ cat .emacs.d/.emacsrc
  (setq-default inhibit-eol-conversion t)

which means if a DOS-formmatted file is loaded, ^M appears at the end of
each line.
