Hi All,
I'm trying to move some user accounts from a redhat box to a debian box. I copy across /etc/passwd /etc/shadow /etc/group, but I can't log onto the new box with the old password. If I change the password on the new box (passwd <username> ) I can log on fine, so it's definately just the hash.
I'm guessing that the passwords have been hashed differently on the two systems, but I can't seem to find which hash is being used on each machine. I assumed it was always an md5 hash.
All the hashes start with $1$ on both boxes, which I understand the magic number for an md5 hash.
any ideas much appreciated.
