I often mount /tmp as a separate FS, in case Something Happens and it
should become full, e.g

/dev/hdc1 526M 32K 499M 1% /tmp
and
/dev/da0s1f 203M 148K 187M 0% /tmp

(on two very different machines) -- I suppose with a view towards making
anything that doesn't absolutely require RW access read only. However,
that does seem like something of a pain in the arse.

Unless I'm very much mistaken as to how these things work, nothing
should need RW access until all the file systems are mounted... I
believe / is initially mounted RO anyway? Often is after a single user
mode boot.
