Bad ram. Gets you every time.

I had a laptop I was about to throw out cos it crashed unpredictably and
frequently. It seemed to pass memtest fine, but on a whim I removed the
ram anyway and it's been solid as a rock ever since. The problem came on
gradually, and initially only affected windows, but slowly deteriorated
over time.
