[Nottingham] NTL Nottingham Network Changes (& elsewhere?)

Folks,

I was clobbered today by NTL's broadband network replumbings, and my
Linux box and modem didn't automatically recover.

The problem:

The cable modem shows that it has synced up and looks fine. Meanwhile,
dhcp-client on your Linux box repeatedly fails to get a new dhcp lease.
Power cycling the modem doesn't cure this.

The fix:

Just for good measure, switch off your modem for a minute or so and then
power it back up;

If not fixed, restart your Linux box network services and restart your
firewall; (You may also need to restart any other services that listen
to a network port.)

If still not fixed, then power off your cable modem, disconnect the
coaxial cable. With the coaxial cable still disconnected, power up your
modem and check that you can get a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx address offered by
your modem to a dhcp request. (Reboot your Linux box if still
struggling.) Then power down the modem, reconnect the coax (careful not
to bend the centre connector) and power up. You may need to restart your
network services (or just reboot!) to then pick up a new (non-192...)
address from dhcp-client.

... And if that still doesn't get you going, then phone NTL faults!

0845 454 0000* for all Customer Service related issues
0871 225 1111* for all Broadband Technical issues.

* When calling form an ntl landline, 0845 calls cost no more than 5p per
minute. 0871 calls cost no more than 10p per minute. All chargeable
calls are subject to a 6p connection charge. Calls rates from non-ntl
landlines may vary.

FREE PHONE Internet service announcement line:
If you think there may be a fault in your area affecting your Broadband
connection you can check this on ntl's free phone Internet server
announcement line: 0800 052 4315.

Service status is also posted on:
http://www.ntl-isp.ntl.com/ServiceStatus/

Or use 0800 0522000 and a few extra levels of robot DTMF menus...

The changes are for load balancing across their network and to offer an
upgrade to 10Mbit/s downlink, 512kbit/s uplink. This should "magically"
become enabled at some time, presumably at no extra charge but with some
sort of quota limits and new terms of use.

Now, when might us subscribers get to know officially?

Hope that helps a few,

Cheers,
Martin

Disclaimer: I merely use NTL cable broadband and have no other
(non-wired) connection with them!
