[Nottingham] AbiWord - Performance Issues

Does anybody haver any suggestions as to how to make scrolling  
through documents faster? I'm using an old IBM ThinkPad and whilst it  
does everything else really well, for some reason whenever I open a  
large document AbiWord just seems to take forever to do anything with  
it and if I try scrolling through the text it tends to pause a lot.
