"file" does what you want (or my version does anyway) at least for GIF
files (doesn't seem to work with PNG or JPEG).  I imagine you want it to
do JPEG though... so you might have to get ImageMagick and do...

identify /var/www/images/*
and you'd get a full list. 

or if it complains about too long argument lists...
for f in /var/www/images/*;do identify $f;done

Could even put "| tee images.txt" on the end to create a file recording
them whilst also displaying on screen...
