Thanks for all the thoughts and suggestions about 64 bit.  Motherboard and processor arrived to day, so choice time soon.

FYI Out of 8 replies the score was:

Ubuntu 3
Debian 1
Suse 3
FC 1
Mandriva 2.5
Gentoo 1
Discovery/LX 1

I guess on the basis of continuity Mandriva will stay (despite my temptation to try compiling from scratch with Gentoo..)
