Ubuntu do align themselves to Debian Unstable periodically - around the time
of an Ubuntu release. They then move away from the debian release in a
different direction, with the aim to converge again at the next Ubuntu
release.

So there may be some differences between the release levels of individual
packages - and sometime major changes such as the transition to gcc4 or new
versions of libc. But on the whole from an operational point of view they're
very similar.

I run Ubuntu and Debian servers at home and treat them identically.

Cheers,
Al.
