I think my problem may be the fglrx driver for the ATI graphics card. The
documentation isn't very good. It seems like the card automatically scales
the TV (s-video) output whatever the resolution I set for the X display. I
probably need to experiment with different modelines.

What display resolution and modeline do you use?

That sounds like a video overlay problem...

I used a single oldish (0.7.x) and patched lirc for the USB-UIRT
http://www.usbuirt.com/. The ntl shark controller is a bit strange though
as the signals each button press gives alternate! The setup box is
sensitive to this so you need to send the two different codes for, say, 1
if you want to to change channel to, say, 112.
