Fastest and quickest at what?
For a specific benchmark? A specific task? A specific app?
There is talk in the thread about compiler flags and kernel
optimisations but no real talk about what you're trying to optimise. I
think that's quite dangerous.
I really do believe the answer will be "It depends."
Also one valid time measurement that lots of people overlook is the
human time spent configuring or compiling things up instead of going out
and drinking beer with your friends ;)
I like binary distributions for this reason and for repeatability though
I do tend to roll my own kernels (in packages which for work at least
are then common across same hardware machines).
