You don't say what video card(s).
Nvidea has something called twinview which works over and above X dual 
screen stuff. 
(I've had it going, unfortunately it doesn't work with composite, so no 
XGL.)
Did I see a review of a distro with XGL on XFCE? (No twin screens though 
I bet.)
Can't remember the name.
