It's a Firefox thing, not an Ubuntu thing.

In Firefox, choose "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu. On the first
tab ("Main") you have the option to turn the Downloads window on or
off. If the window is turned on you can choose to have it close
automatically once the download has finished. You can also adjust the
options about where the files are to be saved once downloaded.

Ain't it good, Free software!  :-)
