[Nottingham] My Linux broke (Rennacker Ed)

Hi. I've had similar problems on a clients' Windows server box: slow to
respond in everything, stuff appearing to have hung, etc. Turned out to
be that he'd gone out of warranty by adding memory (the incorrect speed,
as it turned out).

He'd done the sensible on the system by previously fixing the amount of
swap space, only he hadn't adjusted for the extra RAM.

Quick fix was to boot into safe mode, kill the swapfile, adjust the
partition size then reinstate the swapfile. After that things were sweet.

To do this with SuSE you need to boot Ranish partition editor, delete
the swap partition, then resize the root partition to accomodate the new
swap partition, then make a new one and restart.

If you do this with Knoppix (I don't know if it can be done with
Knoppix, having never tried) you need to use the noswap switch (check
the cheatcodes, I'm not sure what the switch is) otherwise Knoppix will
use whatever Linux swap partitions it detects.

HTH,

Jim
