If you can get the machine into single-user mode, you might be able to
poke at the logfile generated by X per user (at least, on RH based
distros it does):

~user/.xsession-errors

I'd hazard a guess that you switched on some fancy widget (Beryl,
Compiz, something like that) and a recent package update has b0rked it.

If you can get a console session (as Martin suggested) while all the
graphical wobbling is going on, you could watch the file in real time.
