Are you running the closed-source NVIDIA graphics driver? has there been a
kernel update recently? if so try re-installing the NVIDIA driver. It will
need linking against the updated kernel source. Alternatively you could
always try running sax2 and re-configuring your X server. Make sure you
are in runlevel 3 first: init 3 then once you have got it working with
sax2 init 5 will bring up your graphical logon window.
