Best is to check up on the terms and conditions and what their policies
appear to be.
Regardless, usually it's a case of if you don't break things for others
and you don't get noticed, then there's no problem.
I would imagine that their main concern is for if they have a
concentration of a few thousand all "file sharing". That's both
noticeable and it will likely break the routers by saturating the
routing tables...
If you want to go geekie, you could experiment with setting up ad-hoc
wireless networks or a mesh network.
I'll echo Jim's comments that a hardware firewall is a good idea. You're
bound to be checked out for cackability by other students! Assume that
the residence LAN is as hostile as the open web.
