As a distro gadfly, I have found Fedora to be like the little girl
with the curl. When it is good it is very very good, but when it is
bad it is horrid.
My problems have mostly been in the video department. The xorg-x11
packages were initially up the creek in Fedora Core 4, and until they
were fixed you had to use the FC3 packages. With Fedora 9 the maximum
screen size I can get is 800x600. If I edit xorg.conf to drive my
1280x1024 monitor I get out-of-frequency-range error messages on the
monitor. I did a little googling and forum searching to try and
resolve the problem but gave up in the end.
So in my opinion Fedora is broken too often for someone like me to
use. In recent years I've found openSUSE very good and the desktop was
beautifully hinted and antialiased (or whatever the technical term is)
in 10.3. Unfortunately fonts are not as pretty in 11.0 even with the
subpixel hinting enabled in freetype2. So currently I'm back Ubuntu
which is shaping up very nicely as the user-friendly distro. It has
elegant fonts, and identified my Broadcom wifi chip and offered to
download the necessary firmware file to get it working.
