...which, of course, can go Horribly Wrong as has been demonstrated to
me several times in the recent past by a closed thread suddenly being
expanded to include a new set of recipients, who become privy to the
entire thread when they shouldn't be...

Very convenient, in my experience, that one. Especially when the
following scramble to point fingers ensues amongst the original
recipient group.

Trim, and be contextual. That's all that's required.
