Jim, thanks for the help but it's still not playing so I think I'll just junk SuSE and try something else.
Originally I tried to install Mepis 7 (64 bit) but it would not recognise my RAID setup and tried to install on one disk or the other.
Anyone got any suggestions as to which distro will do what I want i.e.rip/play/store music files, play the odd DVD, view/store photo files, run OO.o3 and Firefox, preferably with KDE front end, which can be installed on an AMD x2 machine with RAID.
Alistair

There is a known bug in OpenSuSE 11.1 (which I haven't come across
myself, surprisingly enough), which the team are working on. It's down
to permissions for CD/DVD drives, and here's /a/ workaround if it is that*:
YAST >> Security and Users >> User Management >> "select your user" >>
Edit >> Details >> Groups >> check "cdrom" and "disk" and then click on
"ACCEPT".
There are several more (temporary) fixes, but I won't give you the
50,000-odd Google hits in one big email... this one would seem to
suffice until Novell or the community find a way to patch this rather
embarrassing cockup.
*If you can access the drive with a data DVD or CD then it most likely
is this.
