Hi,

I wonder, what is added to the end of dmesg when you plug in the
device? That would usually say what is detected (ie. which devices).

What does lsusb show?

You may need to use fdisk or fsdisk to change a partition table
*somewhere* to make sure the thing that's mounted as a cdrom is no
longer recognised as such... or it may be that something more exotic
is going on and the firmware is doing more than the standard USB
storage default - like emulating a cdrom drive.
