There is a trend to move functionality away from the end device - so
documents can be maintained and edited in a browser without really
using any local storage (google documents), the same goes for photo
editing (picnik) and music / video playing (youTube, Spotify)...

Mind you I still agree the devices can be too basic on the basis of
the small screen size (isn't that what's meant by "too cheap"?). I
really struggle to use things with 1024-wide screens; not to mention
losing 1/3 of the vertical real-estate to an untweaked browser...
