I use VirtualDub, TMPEGEnc (for finalising) and Pinnacle 10 in a Windows 
VM simply because I can take full advantage there of multiple cores - 
very handy for on-the-road editing where speed is at issue over quality. 
For clustering I use Cinelerra. Stick with raw DV for editing if you  
can, downsample at the end. Takes longer but the results are invariably 
better.
