Thanks Brian - first question, is it possible to connect to the Virgin cable
feed?  I've seen a few box of tricks talked about, but little current
information.

We don't know if the house aerial is viable (and have no TV down there to
test with) so may have to get Virgin after all.

That is my main hobby with Linux, happy to give you some help. These days I
use Mythbuntu and build very little from source. It's a fantastic suite of
programs and with Nvidia and VDPAU, HD playback is sweet from freesat and,
in time freeview.
