Operators may not be able to tell if you're tethering from a standard data
connection (though there have been some who have used browser agent
detection), but they do control the ROM updates that get offered to your
phone over the network, and have the ability to add and remove features as
they wish.

I'd be interested in this Android User Group too! :)
